getting back to work...

Sorry I haven't been around for a while - my in-laws were in town, Mr. F came to visit briefly, and, well, I've been busy slacking.  I did, however, go to the Tuesday night S'n'B at Pekoe's last night.

Now, I have not exactly been the most regular attendee of S'n'B gatherings here in Boulder.  But I go when I actually can.  (Our meetings tend to be scheduled on days when I am out of town, have special late-night on campus commitments, or Mr. F is visiting.  So I usually make a meeting every month or two.)  However, I seem to have really bad luck.  On a number of occasions, I have been the *only* person to show up.  On other occasions, I am one of two.  When I see the pictures (such as in the new S'n'B book) of lots of people getting together and knitting, I am often deeply sceptical.  Clearly these pictures have been doctored.

Anyhow, last night, while perfectly pleasant, was one of those nights.  I sat conspicuously by myself for what seemed like an eternity (and must have been about five minutes), wondering how long I could knit in public by myself before heading home.  Then Tara showed up.

We had a lovely conversation, and I made progress on my current to-be-felted ball and my to-be-felted diaper bag.  Tara barely knitted at all, because I kept her chatting most of the time.  She was telling me the story of her three current craft book projects - all under contract, and all with impending deadlines.

This was, I think, just the kick in the arse that I needed.  I don't know if I have explained to you all or not, but I am also writing a book.  No, it's not about knitting (although I am beginning to wish I could write a book about knitting and have it count for tenure - wouldn't that be fun?).  In fact, it is because I am supposed to be writing this book that I decided to start the blog.  I am going to be spending much of the next 15 months by myself (well, unless you count the cats) writing a manuscript for Sharing Democracy (yup - that's the title).  Since I'll be technically all alone, I thought it would be good to develop a social outlet via the blog to take the edge off.  (I'll also be moving to Salt Lake City - but that's for another entry.)

Anyhow, burnt out after writing four articles in two and half months, I have been steadfastly avoiding work on the book.  Tara immediately guessed what I've been doing instead:  knitting.  Well, knitting, blogging, and rock climbing.  And dreaming of the perfect Addi Turbo Haiku.  Talking to her about how she is frantically juggling one husband, two children, and three book contracts reminded me of how painful it is to approach a deadline with little to show for yourself.

So, today, dear bloggers, I make a solemn promise to you.  I will take a few hours today to work out a work schedule and plan my reading for the next few weeks.  (And then I'll go to my abs and stretching class at the rock gym, followed by some knitting and bad TV.)

In the meantime, keep up the Haiku entries!  Let's see how many different languages there are in which we can compose odes to Addis...
